  • Folklore and Tradition

This mysterious procession takes place evey year on Good Friday.

The tradition started in 1475. At the time, a theatre show would present the entombment and resurrection of Christ.

A unique procession

The station of the cross in Lessines is the only one in the North of Europe to mention the entombment of Christ. The date in the religious calendar has been kept and penitents, in black habit and balaclava. escort Christ in this memorial day.

Program

  • Religious service in the Saint Pierre collegiate church with readings, songs, invocations and extracts of Bach's Passions
  • Procession through the town, plunged into darkness. Some of the penitents use their drums, others carry wax torches to light the way
  • Once back at the collegiate church, the ritual of Christ entombment then takes place
