- Folklore and Tradition
Meet Simpélourd (a mix between "simple et lourd", meaning "simpleton"), also nicknamed Mononk ("mon oncle" or "my uncle"): the main star of Soignies' Ducasse. This folkloric event takes place every third Sunday of October.
This fictive character was a long time ago the symbol of abandonned husbands, taken by his friends from one pub to another, often ridiculing himself in the process. Today, he represents a well humoured guy, often a joker, always having a good time.
The giant puppet of Simpélourd will first appear at the railway station then will make its way through the city, all the way to the Place Verte, where it will be suspended at one of the windows. The effigy will be burnt on a bonfire at the end of the festivities.
